I ran across this one in scans of original art being auctioned, and the copy with the hand-written caption isn’t really legible. It appears to be a rare example of not every Far Side actually being on the internet in usable form.

Of course, I don’t remember even seeing it in a book. It probably ran, but this is an obscure one, folks.

It’s pretty funny - the whole “awkward title drop of product name in commercial” gimmick combined with “ obscure product segment for ad”, “bizarre infomercial woes/white people problems”, and “bizarre musical disaster”.

Which he’d revisit two years later.

Sometimes the urge to believe in the upsell lingers, I suppose... This one, in having a copyright/trademark friendly version of “d’addario” indicates to me that either Gary knew people into guitars and paid attention, or is into guitars himself, or ran across some over-enthusiastic ad copy for d’addario somewhere.

Yeah, I’ll bet it’s from a mag he had laying around. I want to believe that Gary read Circus. I’m guessing that if Gary was into guitars he would have drawn real-life models...or maybe not because of copyright?

This’ll be my last Far Side response, I think. It’s been fun, Ramblin Rover, but I no longer have the energy.

I mean that, it’s been a shit ton of fun doing FSF with you, normally I’d just quietly go away, but this was important to my Fridays.

There are definitely signs of cribbing from real guitars here, otherwise the fender headstock wouldn’t be there, and there really is a Schecter V out there with a headstock like that. An SG (?) with a fender headstock, though...

I agree the Schecter looks similar. On the Fenders, I was thinking Showmaster but they’re probably just strats drawn without the offset.

I’m not any good as a player, but I am something of a guitar technology whore. It is what it is.

One that that makes the speaker’s guitar actually closer to being an SG with a Fender neck is that SG’s really do have an infinitesimal offset. But, the proportions of the horns aren’t right compared with the rest of the body. Phyllis’ guitar is anyone’s guess - looks like it has at least one tuner on the down side of the headstock, and the bridge is missing or in the wrong place. Closer to SG or Les Paul proportions, impossible to tell if it has an upper cutaway.

Just a weird mix of care taken in drawing (more than the Far Side usually has) and weird incongruities.
